NC State Richter Scholar

2005 Richter Scholar Simon Huleatt

2005 Richter Scholar Simon Huleatt is a senior at North Carolina State University majoring in Business Management with a concentration in Operations & Supply Chain Management.  His travels in Latin America have given him a strong background in Spanish, and in 2005 he also took the opportunity to study at Oxford University in England.  Independent since age 18, Simon has worked throughout his time in college, and most recently completed an internship with the Diplomatic Security branch of US State Department in Washington, DC.  He will extend his experiences by interning with the Global Purchasing division of Caterpillar Inc. this summer.

Simon’s significant academic achievements include the receipt of one of NC State’s most highly valued merit-based scholarships, Caldwell Scholar, national acknowledgment of his leadership role as president of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and ongoing recognition from NC State's College of Management for his involvement in the community while maintaining an outstanding GPA.

He has also demonstrated his leadership skills by being an ambassador for his school in tutoring children at the Navajo Nation, Arizona during Spring Break 2005, and taking part in a Tsunami Relief Trip during December 2005, and presiding over a number of campus organizations.

Simon looks forward to completing his studies and beginning a career in global supply-chain management.

The R. gene and Nancy D. Richter Foundation

The scholarship is named in memory of R. Gene Richter who was a galvanizing force in the field of procurement.  Gene led the supply organizations at The Black & Decker Company, Hewlett Packard and International Business Machines; all three of these organizations won Purchasing magazine’s Medal of Professional Excellence.  His thoughts, ideas, and practices transformed modern thinking in the emerging procurement field.  The R. Gene Richter Scholarship program was established to develop high-potential undergraduate students into tomorrow's procurement leaders.  Its goal is to fast-track participants into the profession through a high quality support base and access to a strong network.  This scholarship acts as a way of continuing his efforts to promote excellence within the profession.

Winners of the R. Gene Richter Scholarship are awarded tuition assistance of $5,000 (December graduates will be awarded $2,500).  In addition, Richter Scholars are enrolled in a mentoring program where they are paired with an established executive in the field.  Current-year recipients are invited to attend the Annual International Supply Management Conference sponsored by the Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM).  They will also be the guests of honor at a special Awards Presentation Dinner.  Richter Scholars will be escorted to this banquet by their mentors.   One year after graduation and completion of real-world experience in the field of supply chain management, Richter Scholars are invited to participate in an exclusive, invitation-only Power Conference for the executive leadership of the profession held concurrently during the Annual Conference by the Institute for Supply Management™.
